Plans are moving forward to renovate a historic property in downtown Birmingham into new office spaces.

According to REV Birmingham, local business owner Jim Rowland plans to renovate the historic Massey Business College Building at 2024 Third Ave. N.\

It is a three-story, 21,000-square-foot building, and was also previously home to the Alabama Department of Revenue.

The city of Birmingham sold the building to JLR LLC for $650,000 earlier this year, as we reported.

REV Birmingham said about $1 million will be invested to renovate the building. The third floor will include 18 individual office spaces and open workspaces that could house up to 90 workers, as well as two conference rooms and a full kitchen. There will be flexible lease terms with rates in the $500 range. The second floor and mezzanine can be built to suit and also available to lease.

Casey Howard with Harbert Realty Services will be handling leasing for the building.

Rowland told REV Birmingham the building could be ready for new tenants by the end of this year.

The project adds more activity to an increasingly vibrant city center, with First, Second, and Third Avenues North seeing a lot of real estate activity this year.
