Publix supermarkets could build a new $34 million distribution center in Birmingham.
According to Fox 6, the Jefferson County Commission said today the popular supermarket chain plans to build the facility at the Jefferson Metropolitan Industrial Park in McCalla.
The project would reportedly bring close to 200 jobs to the area.
Jefferson County Commission President David Carrington was not immediately available for comment.
Publix spokeswoman Brenda Reid declined to comment on the project.
The Jefferson County Commission told multiple media outlets today the group plans to vote Sept. 10 on a $40,000 tax incentive package for Publix that would stretch over a 10-year period.
If it comes to fruition, the project would be the latest in a series of logistics and distribution projects for western Jefferson County – a list that includes a Dollar General distribution facility and Norfolk-Southern’s intermodal terminal.
